Butterbeer from Harry Potter
If you’ve read the books or watched the films, you’ll know that Butterbeer is a favourite of Hogwarts students, including Harry, Ron and Hermione.
Students would often buy it when visiting Hogsmeade. Served cold in bottles and hot in “foaming tankards”, its taste was described as similar to butterscotch.
In real life, it’s also available in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Osaka and Florida.
According to a Universal Studios spokesperson, 50% of people who visit have a butterbeer before they leave! Wow.
Well, you can enjoy a foaming mug of this popular wizarding beverage at home! It’s super easy to make.
You will need:
-1 cup (8 oz) American cream soda
-1/2 cup (4 oz) butterscotch syrup
-1/2 tablespoon butter
–Double cream (optional)
Mix softened butter with butterscotch syrup in a bowl. Pour cream soda into the mixture and stir. In a separate bowl, whisk some double cream for 60 seconds or until it forms stiff peaks.
Top the butterscotch mixture with whipped cream. Done!
Ratatouille from Ratatouille
The main message of the film, “Ratatouille” is that anyone can cook. And that includes you!
So if you’re looking to create the ratatouille Remy made in the film, you’ve come to the right place.
The recipe featured in the film was developed by Chef Thomas Keller and would take 4 hours to make in real life.
Here’s a simpler version that’s equally delicious!
You will need:
-6-8 tablespoons olive oil
-2 aubergines cut into 3cm chunks
-2 large red peppers cut into 3cm chunks
-2 small fennel bulbs, cut into 3cm chunks
-1kg courgettes, thickly sliced
-2 medium onions, thinly sliced
-4 fat garlic cloves, sliced
-400-500g skinned chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned
-500g tomato passata
-3 tbsp chopped fresh dill
Simply heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Fry aubergines for 4 minutes and set aside.
Add 2 more tablespoons of olive oil and do the same for the peppers and courgette.
Add the remaining oil and fry some onions until browned, followed by garlic and fennel. Return the fried veggies into the pan with tomatoes and passata. Season with salt and pepper.
Part cover the pan and simmer for 30 minutes. Then stir in the dill. That’s it!
Neapolitan Margherita Pizza from Eat, Pray, Love
In the film, Julia Roberts’ character nearly passes out after her first bite of pizza. She declared that she was in love and in a relationship with pizza after finishing her meal.
That’s the sort of feeling we want to evoke with this minimalist pizza recipe that originated in Naples.
Can you believe that you only need less than 10 ingredients? Fab.
You will need:
-All-purpose flour, for work surface
-4 tablespoons crushed tomatoes
-2 tablespoons olive oil
-4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
-Fresh basil leaves for serving
Preheat your oven to 270°C.
Combine the pizza base mix with 100 ml water in a bowl and mix into a soft dough.
Knead well on a lightly flouted surface for 5 minutes and roll out in a circle measuring about 8 inches in diameter.
Place on a greased baking sheet and leave to stand in a warm place for 10 minutes.
Spread 2 tablespoons of crushed tomatoes over the pizza base, leaving a 1-inch border. Drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil and top with cheese.
Bake on the lower rack for 7-9 minutes then transfer to the top rack to broil for 2-3 minutes.
Remove from the oven, top with basil and serve! Too much work? This Piccolino Margherita pizza is close enough!
Turkish Delight from Chronicles of Narnia
The White Witch put Edmund Pevensie under her spell by bewitching him with some Turkish Delight!
In real life, Turkish Delight is also highly addictive and truly magical. But you don’t need to have supernatural powers to make it!
This sweet treat is super easy to prepare! It only takes 17 minutes!
You will need:
-flavourless oil for the tray
-500g granulated sugar
-1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
-120g cornflour,plus extra for dusting
-1/2 teaspoon rosewater or 2 tablespoons rose syrup
-pink food colouring if not using rose syrup
-icing sugar for dusting
Simply oil a baking tray. Then combine sugar, cream of tartar and 500ml water in a pan. Cook over low heat until the sugar melts.
Turn to medium heat and boil for 10-15 minutes until the mixture becomes syrupy.
In a separate bowl, whisk cornflour into 150ml water. Add to the sugar syrup and continue mixing until you reach a smooth, gloopy consistency.
Take out the whisk and mix with a spatula over medium heat until it’s thick enough to see a clear line drawn through it with the spatula. This can take about an hour.
Stir in the rosewater or rose syrup and add the food colouring if using, then pour everything into the tray and even out on top.
Sieve some cornflour and icing sugar together over a board and carefully turn out the Turkish delight.
Cover it with more icing sugar and cornflour and cut into cubes with a sharp knife. Done!
